University of Aruba and University of Maatricht (emeritus)
Gérard-René de Groot is emeritus professor of comparative and private international law of Maastricht University (Netherlands) and professor at the University of Aruba (West Indies). He studied Law at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in the Netherlands and at the Westfälische Wilhelmsuniversität Münster in Germany. From 1974 until 1982, he taught Private and Comparative Law in Groningen. After 1982, he taught Private Law, Comparative Law and Private International Law at the University of Maastricht, where he obtained the degree of Doctor iuris. In 1988, he was appointed Professor of Comparative Law and Private International Law in Maastricht, where he retired in 2016. Since 2007, he is also Professor of Private Law at the University of Aruba (West Indies). He has published books on nationality law and problems of legal translation. He regularly publishes articles on comparative law, private international law and the protection of regional and minority languages. Since 2016, he is member of the Committee of Experts of the Council of Europe, monitoring the implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
