SummerTrans IX

Human vs machine translation with a focus on legal translation

21–27 September 2025, Bolzano/Bozen, Eurac Research

Translation theory meets translation practice

SummerTrans is back!

The next edition, SummerTrans IX, will take place in Bolzano/Bozen from 21 to 27 September 2025 under the topic "Human vs machine translation with a focus on legal translation".

The summer school offers a broad variety of courses on new developments relating to theory and practice in translation, interpreting and terminology. The course topics span from literary translation to film dubbing, from wine terminology to teaching and from post-editing to the effective use of new technologies such as corpora, machine translation systems and GPTs. This edition's focus on legal translation recognises the special, ever-growing social relevance of translation in the field of law. Several courses will therefore deal with the specific challenges of legal language and address legal comparison, legal terminology, certified translation, legal translation (including legal translation in minority languages) and the revision of legal texts.

SummerTrans IX is aimed at professionals in the fields of translation, interpreting or terminology working in public institutions, private organisations or as freelancers. It is equally aimed at students and young or not-so-young teachers and researchers in these fields, employees in the translation technology, publishing and film translation industries, etc. A PhD school will help young researchers discuss their ideas and methods with experienced professors and researchers as well as with their peers. A dedicated social programme will make sure that participants meet and mingle enjoying their summer school and the local sights.

Participants can create their own individual programme for a full week of insights into recent trends, useful methods and future perspectives or choose to attend single courses.
